Herbs for DepressionEver been told “just snap out of it”? Being depressed isn’t just a state of mind, it’s a state of the body and there are some great herbs for depression that are fabulous to help you recover. Depression isn’t something you can just snap out of. For most people, it’s the last place they want to live their lives but the black dog has a way of creeping in without warning and depression can easily take over once it gets a hold.

Certainly orthodox medicine has anti-depressants and for many people, these are literally a life saver. However, there are some fabulous herbs and nutrients that can really enhance the road to recovery.

Most people know of the incredible value from St John’s Wort. For depression, it’s the first herb that comes out of the dispensary for most herbalists but it does have interactions and it may not always be the most suitable option. It can interact with orthodox anti-depressants and theoretically  it can reduce the effectiveness of the pill. It’s also not a herb to use if you’re on blood thinning medications either so this is one of those herbs that while brilliant at what it does, there are some provisos for its use.

In comparison, while Saffron is one of those fantastic herbs for depression, it doesn’t use the same enzyme pathways as orthodox medicines so it’s safe to use with virtually anything else. It’s incredibly expensive though and adding this to a herb mix will push the price up but its effects are amazing and it’s well worth the investment. There’s a growing body of scientific evidence to support its use in depression as well which is great to see and proves its efficacy.

Something else I usually suggest my patients is SAMe (S-adenosyl-methionine) because this is a precursor to an enzyme that has a direct impact on serotonin levels and therefore on your capacity to feel happy or sad. Along with that I often suggest vitamin D in high doses initially and then tapering off to a maintenance dose. This is because so many people are vitamin D deficient and this vitamin is the pathway towards that vital serotonin that governs mood and feelings.

So if you’re feeling a little low, there are ways to overcome those feelings and get back to your vital and healthy self. No, you cant just snap out of it so don’t take any notice of anyone who expects you to do so. Depression is a chemical imbalance in the body and therefore can be receptive to treatment just like any other disease. There are some fabulous herbs for depression to give gentle yet strong results so get some help, you’ll be glad you did.
